Detection of determination types in exposed concrete buildings by non-destructive examination methods and repair methods: Ankara case

Concrete, which is one of the most basic and widely used building materials today, started to be used in architecture at the beginning of the 20th century. The use of reinforced concrete transformed masonry-based architecture and contributed to the beginning of the period known as modern architecture. Reinforced concrete, which is resistant to various weather conditions of its environment and has important qualities, has emerged with its exposed concrete appearance since the late 1950s. Many buildings, which are important in the history of modern architecture, have been built with exposed concrete, which has become widespread with the influence of the Brutalism movement. These early-modern structures, which continue to exist today and are now in the status of historical structures, are valuable in terms of reflecting our recent architectural history and the characteristics of the period in which they were built, and it is important to conserve these structures and pass on to the future. However, some deteriorations occur in these structures due to various factors during the application or usage phase. In order to protect the exposed concrete structures and transmit them to the future, these discontinuities should be determined and interventions should be carried out with appropriate repairs in case of need. Detection of deterioration and obtaining information about structures are provided by non-destructive testing methods, which are still being developed and have many advantages. The researches carried out within the scope of the study were examined on the exposed concrete structures selected as examples from Ankara. In this context, preliminary research information on the sample structures and non-destructive testing methods according to on-site determinations and repair methods are presented by evaluating the literature.
