Horror genre in contemporary Arabic literature

Abstract (EN)

It is accepted that horror, which has an important place in human life, emerged in literature at the second half of the eighteenth century. This genre which has started with Gothic trend in western literature, aimed to create a sense of horror on the reader by using elements such as eerie places, supernatural beings and events. The horror literature has developped gradually and its effect spreaded out non-western countries. Although there are masterpieces containing horror elements such as One Thousand and One Nights in Arabic literature, the examples that can count in horror genre, are given in twentieth century and later on. Firstly, in this study, the definiton of horror and its place in literature have been discussed. Then the emergence of horror literature in western literature has been presented in a general framework. Lastly the emergence of horror genre in contemporary Arabic literature have been discussed and prominent writers and their works have been introduced
