The research of usability of the volcanic tuff that is avaiable in the region of Çanakkale-Ayvacık, in blended cement production

Cement is a bulk product of a construction material to be used in various field and billions of tons. Cement; is obtained after putting the raw materials such as clay, marl, and limestone through the certain process (such as crushing, grinding, etc.) with cooking at high temperature (1300°C - 1600°C). High energy costs are required to achieve the process temperature. As a result of the combustion applied to obtain this energy, high levels of carbon and some harmful gases are released to the environment. In order to reduce energy costs and harmful gas emissions, tuff, ash, silica dust and slag such as pozzolan are used as an additive agent during cement production. The usability of the volcanic tuff that located province of Çanakkale, district of Ayvacık, was researched to use as a natural pozzolan raw material in production of blended cement. For this purpose; recipes prepared with raw and cooked ingredients in different grain sizes were used. The samples obtained from these mixtures prepared in certain proportions; Chemical, mineralogical, SEM and optic dilatometer analyses were performed by physical and mechanical experiments. This analysis and test results showed that tuff can be used in production of blended cement. It is concluded that the volcanic tuff is used in the form of raw material and it can be used 10-15% in the mortar and 20-25% cement in the mortar prepared with the cooked material.
