Enzyme inhibitory and antioxidant effects of cardopatium corymbosum.

Abstract (EN)

The Compositae family which is a flowering plant that has distribution in the Mediterranean, Eastern Europe and Small Asia, have about 1000 genera and 25000 species. In addition to their antiinflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic potential, some of these species have been proven to have high antioxidant power in studies with their extracts (roots, stems, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds). Cardopatium corymbosum (L.) Pers. is a species belonging to the Compositae family. The aim of this study is to determine the phytochemical contents, antioxidant activities and enzymes inhibitory effects of ethanol, methanol and water extracts of C. corymbosum. To determine the antioxidant potential of the extracts, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, 2,2'-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activities and iron reducing powers were measured. In addition α-glucosidase/α-amylase, acetylcholinesterase (AChE)/butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), elastase and thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) inhibitory activities of the extracts were evaluated to determine the antidiabetic, anti-Alzheimer, anti-aging and anticancer potentials respectively. The results showed that the major compounds in C. corymbosum extracts were chlorogenic acid, fumaric acid and rutin. It was observed that methanol extract had the highest total phenolic and flavonoid content and antioxidant activity. It was determined that all extracts have low inhibitory activity on AChE, BChE and elastase, and moderate inhibitory activity on α-glucosidase. However, C. corymbosum extracts exhibited potent TrxR inhibitory activity. In our study, it was concluded that C. corymbosum have antioxidant, antidiabetic and anticancer activities.
