Carl Gustav Jung's Gnosticism: From wholeness to unity and archetypal manifestations in the works of Geoffrey Chaucer's Troilus and Criseyde and Robert Henryson's The Testament of Cresseid

The theory and concepts developed by Carl Gustav Jung under the term of "analytical psychology" encompass important studies for understanding the depth of human nature. The ultimate goal is for the individual to fulfill themselves on the journey of life. In this process, the symbols and archetypes of the collective unconscious are among the most important tools for self-realization. This thesis will explore the psychological depths of characters within the context of Geoffrey Chaucer's "Troilus and Criseyde" and Robert Henryson's "The Testament of Cresseid", delving into universal themes such as love, loyalty, and morality. Through the lens of Jung's four main archetypes: Persona, shadow, anima-animus, and the self - it aims to address humanity's shared concerns while examining the timeless relevance of these works. The purpose of this thesis is to discuss the applicability of Jung's concept of the collective unconscious through the characters of Troilus, Criseyde, and Cresseid, emphasizing the contribution of literary works to individual self-realization. Through this study, the aim is to analyze Jung's theoretical concepts through literary works and provide the reader with a broader perspective in conjunction with the text.
