Abstract (EN)

Çayeli is a district of the city Rize in the coastal Black Sea Region, and contains 44304 people according to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute in 2018. Çayeli consists of 54 villages, 2 town municipalities and 18 neighbourhoods under the jurisdiction of these municipalities. The city center involves 17 neighbourhoods. This study investigates the development and spatial distribution of population throughout the past years in Çayeli. Population registrations are examined, detailed and represented as chart, graphic and map in the study with a special attention to post-1944 period as Çayeli was upgraded to be a district in 1944. Spatial distribution of population is analysed in consideration of changes in both urban and rural population alongside total population change. The study examines the characteristics of population, change in population, and physical and human factors affected this change. Additionally, it aims both to address problems evolved as a result of quantitative change in population, and to offer possible solutions to these problems. Estimated changes in population are illustrated by using population projections. Population of Çayeli reached 44304 people in 2018 from 28480 in 1945. Rural population decreased to 22968 in 2018 from 28480 in 1945 while urban population increased to 21336 in 2018 from 6084 in 1945. The youth population rate declined in total population rate while the elderly population rate is grown. The growth in elderly population required making demographical investments to elderly people. Meanwhile, considering the potential decrease in young population, it is necessary to take steps not only to prevent dramatic decline but also to improve the quality of population. In addition to this, it is also necessary to make endeavour and take socio-economic measures in order to prevent migration.
