ABSTRACT GIS AND UA SUPPORTED COASTAL PLANNING: KÖRFEZ CASE Gülenay ŞAHİN Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems Program Eskişehir Technical University, Graduate School of Science, January 2019 Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Saye Nihan ÇABUK "Throughout the history, the coastal lands have significantly contributed to the economic and social development of the countries, as they have hosted a variety of sectors such as tourism, transportation and industry. However, within this process, the coasts themselves have also changed and transformed. These changes and transformations in coastal areas have reflections on the surrounding districts, sometimes on the provincial territories and even on the whole country. The monitoring, inspection and the mitigation of the negative impacts on the coastal lands can most preferably be achieved with a sustainable coastal planning process. The planning process is primarily based on the existence of the proper inventory and analyses about the land. The effects of the former plan decisions on land as well analysis of these effects, has a critical role on the success of the plans. In order to highlight this critical role, temporal change detection analysis for Körfez province was made with the support of GIS and RS methods. 2009 and 2015 SPOT imagery and thematic maps were examined to perform the change detection process. As a result of an integrated evaluation of satellite images, development plan decisions, digital thematic maps and topographical maps, the effects of the land use decisions on coastal areas were interpreted for the study area. Consequently, a planning model supported with temporal change detection analysis was proposed. The model is expected to help detect the positive and negative impacts of land use decisions on coastal lands, foresee the possible effects and thus, perform the planning process with a sustainable approach."
