Abstract (EN)
The present study was aimed to determine the factors affecting the perception of patient safety culture among surgical nurses, and conducted with 135 surgical nurses who were working in the surgical clinics of a foundation hospital and a private hospital located in Istanbul, Turkey. Socio-Demographic Information Form and Patient Safety Culture Scale (PSCS) were used to determine the level of nurses' patient safety culture and the factors affecting the perception of patient safety. The data were analysed by SPSS 21.0 package program. Normal distribution of the data was tested by One Sample Kolmogorov Smirnov Test and homogeneously distributed data were analysed descriptively by using mean, standard deviation, and frequency; and comparatively by using Independent Sample t-Test, One Way ANOVA, and Pearson Correlation Analysis. Lineer Regression Analysis was used to investigate the factors affecting patient safety culture, and the findings were evaluated with 95% confidence interval with p<0.05 significance level. According to the findings of the present study, education level of nurses, participation of congresses and symposium regarding patient safety, level of evaluating their clinic regarding patient safety policies, and experiece of writing event reports during the past one-year were found significantly effective on the perception of patient safety by surgical nurses. In parallel with these findings, it can be suggested that hospital managers should raise the awareness of surgical nurses regarding patient safety, and try to maintain the level of awareness by continuous education programs, support them to attend to scientific organisations related to patient safety. In addition, to establish patient safety culture and improve its perception by nurses, the number of scientific studies regarding this subject should be increased.
