Effectiveness of pain education on surgical nurses' pain knowledge and attitudes

Aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of pain education on pain management and assessment toward surgical nurses' pain knowledge and attitudes. This research has been conducted at Gaziantep University Sahinbey Medical Faculty Education and Research Hospital and consisted of nurses working at surgical wards. Total of 71 nurses participated to this quasiexperimental study. In data collection, questionairies based on the literatüre including nurses' demographics (pre-test), Nurses Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (NKASRP) scale and post-test were used. Data were collected between 1st of June and November 2017. In the context of the research 3 hours pain education program organised and educational content were presented in two session over two days. Nurses were asked to fill pre-test and NKASRP scale prior to education; after one week post-test and NKASRP scale applied. Data were analysed via using SPSS 21 program and chi-square test, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test, Paired Samples t Test ve Kruskal Wallis tests were used besides descriptive analyses. Avarage age of nurses was 31.42 ± 5.62 years; the majority of nurses were female (76.1%), married (66.2%) and has bachelor education (84.5%) in nursing. Nurses mean scores of correct answers from NKASRP scale was 18.73 ± 5.85 before education and increased to 26.64 ± 5.31 following one week after education (p<0.005). While in the scale of NKASRP, pre-training response rate by educational status effective, after the training according to the status of nurse's duty revealed the activityof showing differences. As a result reached the conclusion that the poin training program is effective for the increase of the pain oriented informatia and professional experiences surgical nurses.
