Abstract (EN)

The study was conducted as a descriptive and cross-sectional study in order to determine the effects of noise on anxiety and sleep levels of patients hospitalized in the surgical intensive care unit. The sample of the study consisted of patients hospitalized in the surgical intensive care unit of Istanbul Koşuyolu Yeditepe University Hospital. The study was completed with the participation of 178 patients who were volunteer basis and met the research criteria. The data were collected from the "Patient Diagnosis Form", "STAI FORM TX-1 (State Anxiety Inventory)", "STAI FORM TX-2 (Trait Anxiety Inventory)" and "Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire", which included the socio-demographic and disease-related characteristics of the patients. The obtained data were evaluated using the IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences program. A statistically significant difference was determined between the Trait Anxiety scores of the patients and the variables of education, working status, place of residence, people they live with, and activities done to relax when faced with noise. There was a statistically significant difference between the State Anxiety scores of the patients and the variables of the patients' gender, educational status and place of residence. A statistically significant difference was found between the Richards Campbell Sleep Scale mean score of the patients and the activity performed to relax when the learning noise was encountered. The current study shows that noise increases anxiety in the surgical intensive care setting.
