Özet (EN)

The purpose of this dissertation is to examine Post-Colonial theory in its historical and ideological context, and to determine its contribution to translation studies. The first chapter provides an overview of the colonial histories of Spain, France and Great Britain. Chapter two discusses the fundamentals and development of Post-Colonial theory over the works of Edward Said, Homi Bhabha and Gayatri C. Spivak. Chapter three discusses some elemental concepts in Post-Colonial approaches and in the ramifications of these concepts in translation studies. This chapter also provides examples to these primary concepts and the subjects discussed in the dissertation. The examples focus on literary translation, and contain elements of cultural translation and ideological translation. The Terminology section suggests Turkish counterparts to some terms that are either not yet introduced into the local terminology or are under debate due to the subject being foreign to the local field of study. The Glossary explains such concepts in laymen?s terms, providing small examples. Also, in the last appendix, one of Naguib Mahfouz?s works? first two chapters are translated in both foreignizing and domesticating strategies in order to clarify the distinction between these manners. This dissertation aims to adapt the concept of hybridity, very common in Post-Colonian approaches, to the current cultural and literary translation practices. In doing so, it questions the essentialist constructions of subject-object; criticizes the polarizing policies both in translation and in cultural theory and suggests the revision of the concept of equivalence through the findings explained with hybridity. Deconstructive translation suggestions offer new perspectives to the concepts of equivalence and visibility of the translator. The dissertation is expected to enable new questions to be asked in the field by providing local translations studies with a better view of Post-Colonial approaches.
