Challenges in the adoption of bim in the construction industry of Kazan, Russia

Traditional methods still occupy an irreplaceable part in the construction industry of the Russian Federation. But today, due to the development of technology, traditional technologies begin to demonstrate worse results, if new ones were applied. The key disadvantages are poor quality of design work, misunderstanding between project teams, deterioration of profits and profitability. One of modern technologies is BIM. This technology allows you to create an information model of the future construction, with co-dependent parameters, which avoids a large number of human errors when editing parameters, automatically changing them in the order of dependence. After studying various works, it was found that to date there is very limited consideration of BIM adoption in Kazan, Tatarstan. As a consequence, this research paper will examine the main factors of BIM integration in Kazan, both the opportunities and barriers. Thus, the objectives are to identify the key advantages of the technology, the key barriers and the opportunities for its application. In order to achieve these objectives, a questionnaire survey of the target audience was carried out. Totally 215 questionnaires were sent out and 178 responses were received. The results were analysed using the IBM SPSS. A case study was also conducted to examine the case of BIM application in the construction industry in Kazan. The results showed that among the 30 benefit factors, the key ones were early visualisation of the project, clash detection capabilities, improved interoperability. Among the 32 barrier factors, the main ones were lack of experience in organisations, software licence cost, imperfect training system. The case study revealed that despite the financial costs exceeding the traditional methods, the use of BIM technologies pays for itself many times over in the long term.
