Immigration, race discrimination and gender in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Americanah and The Thing Around Your Neck

In this study, based on the argument that the perception of identity is not inborn and fixed but rather is culturally constructed within a discourse and imposed on the individuals in direct connection with the power relations, the novel Americanah and three selected stories from the short story collection The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie were examined. In this examination, which is conducted with a postcolonial feminist approach, it is aimed to reveal how the novel and the stories exemplify identity conflicts, gender and racial discriminations in the context of immigration. Through the range of the characters, which mostly consists of women with migration experiences, the changes in the perception of identity as a result of different social conditions and experiences were followed and the methods applied by the characters in order to solve their identity conflicts were revealed.
