Applications of double headed eagle depictions in Turkish Islamic art

The aim of this thesis titled " Applications of Double Headed Eagle Depictions in Turkish-Islamic Art" is; The aim is to evaluate the applications of the double-headed eagle on the works in Turkish Islamic art and to bring them to the world of science. The studies were evaluated starting from the works with double-headed eagle depicted in Central Asia and Mesopotamia. In this context, it was ensured that the early period depictions of the double-headed eagle, which has taken place in different geographies and cultures since ancient times, were compared with the examples in Turkish Islamic art. In addition, other than the known double-headed eagle-depicted works, new works were added and interpreted. In order that the artistic application of the double-headed eagle depictions developed from the eagle is more decisive, the examples of the eagle-depicted works were mentioned in their own period and included in the study. Although the double-headed eagle is one of the most widely used and known depictions in the world, it is one of the least informed depictions in terms of its meaning and nature. While the double headed eagle is relatively studied under the headings of Ancient Age, Turkish and Turkish Islamic Arts, there is no comprehensive study on the subject. In the studies, the double-headed eagle was briefly evaluated among the works of the civilizations in the periods mentioned. These evaluations are not sufficient in terms of defining the double-headed eagle, they are just repetitions of each other. With this prepared study, in addition to determining the applications of double-headed eagle depictions in Turkish-Islamic art, it was re-evaluated before and after and presented as a whole. As a result of the information obtained by scanning archaeological data with local and foreign sources, all works with double-headed eagle depictions within the scope of the study were determined. The name, period, location, dimensions, material, place of protection, drawings, pictures and descriptions of the identified works were made. Based on these definitions, similar and different applications in the works in which double-headed eagle depictions were used were discussed comparatively. With the work done, the connection between the meaning of the double-headed eagle in different cultures, arts, beliefs, mythology, traditions and customs and the spread of the application was also addressed, and new resources were provided to enlighten researchers who will work in this field. In the study titled "The applications of double-headed eagle depictions in Turkish Islamic art", more than 2000 eagles, double-headed eagles and incomplete descriptions were examined and those suitable for the study were evaluated. 41 examples in ancient art, 14 in Turkish art and 5 in Islamic art were given as examples to the double-headed eagle depiction, and a catalog study of 148 works within the scope of Turkish-Islamic arts was carried out.
