Value of child: Adana research

The aim of this study is to explore these questions: "Why do we give birth recent times?", "What is the value of a child?", "Is the sex important for the value of a child?", "what do we expect from a child?". To this extend, we tried to learn the thoughts of people who lives in Adana about the notion of "child" in 2016. The value of a child for this parents, the relationship between the child and fertility, parents' expectations and plans of intestments for their children and the psychological and sociological expectations from their child have been concerned. Also the number of children a family has and the effect of sex were assessed. The recent study was carried out in Adana because Adana has various cultural background, people from different point of view and different socioeconomic level and Adana is a metropol are effective. This is a descriptive study and all the data have been collected by surveying. The research "The Value of Child" was firstly carried out in between 1975-1980 with the paralel studies among married couples Indonesia (Sundanese and Javanese samples), Korea, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and the United States and Germany. Prof. Dr. Ciğdem Kağıtçıbaşı (1981) is the coordinator of the study in Turkey. In this study a brief form of questionnaire that Kağıtçıbaşı used was confirmed. The results of the participations of people living in four main towns in Adana were compared to the changes, in time from Kağıtçıbaşı's (1981) research than Kağıtçıbaşı and Ataca (2005) and Kağıtçıbaşı, Ataca and Diri (2005), were commented with Model of Family Change. According to the result it was found that while decreasing the material/utilitarian value of child, the psychological value is increasing; in addition to this it has been seen that the importance of the number of children sex and the expectations from a child changes.
