Investigation of nursing initiatives and parental satisfaction factors used in pediatric emergency unit

Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify the nursing interventions in pediatric emergency department and to investigate the factors affecting parental satisfaction. Method: The research was carried out on an observational descriptive type. The study was conducted between December 2016 and April 2017 with 385 parents who applied to the Akdeniz University Hospital Pediatric Emergency Unit. The data were prepared by the researcher in accordance with the literature; "Parental Promotion Form", "Nursing Initiatives Recognition Form", "Parents 'Satisfaction Level Questionnaire for Parents of Pediatric Emergency Unit", "Parents' Emergency Servist Waiting Time Form". Results: 385 parents with a mean age of 33.27 ± 6.43 participated in the study. As a result of the research, the overall satisfaction of the parents of the pediatric emergency department was 85.7% and the overall satisfaction rate of the nurses was 88.6%. It was found that the satisfaction levels of parents were statistically significant (p <0.05). Factors such as the behavior of the nurses, informing the parents, communication with parents and children, the frequency of follow up of the children, parents' accessibility to the nurses, comfort and cleanliness of the emergency department were affected. As a result of the research, the most nursing interventions in the pediatric emergency unit; Assessment of life signs, intravenous catheterization and blood collection, creating a comfortable and safe environment for the child, fluid infusion and drug applications. Conclusion: The results of this research revealed that the quality of nursing practice needs to be improved in order to increase the satisfaction levels of parents.
