Evaluotions of medical physicians who choose child health and diseases specialization about their field of specialization

Aim: This study examines the perceptions of physicians who have chosen to specialize in pediatrics and diseases regarding their specialization. Material and Method: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted using a 36-question survey prepared by the researchers and ethicists, conducted through face-to-face interviews with physicians working in the field of pediatrics and diseases at İnönü University Faculty of Medicine in Malatya. The entire study population (39 individuals) was reached. Statistical analyses were conducted using IBM SPSS Statistics 26.0. Results: The study found no significant difference in physicians' opinions regarding their specialty based on gender. There were one significant difference in marital status, three significant differences in the number of children, and one significant difference in the title variable. It was observed that physicians prioritized their love of children in their specialty choices, that they experienced difficulties with intensive work and family communication, and that despite the strong public image of their specialty, gender-based inequalities impacted their careers and the distribution of roles within the institution. It has been understood that physicians demand a system that allows them to practice their profession more effectively, and that not only rational but also emotional, social, and professional dynamics influence their choice of this field. Physicians emphasized that the residency training process should be more practice-oriented, that education is not merely about knowledge transfer; it can also be more effective when conducted in conjunction with a healthy institutional culture, effective communication, and supportive social relationships. Conclusion: The findings of the study reveal that pediatrics residency training is a multidisciplinary process that is not limited to the transfer of professional knowledge and technical skills but also encompasses numerous social, cultural, structural, and emotional dimensions. The individual and institutional challenges encountered during residency training indicate the need to review not only clinical duties but also the structural components and systemic support mechanisms of education.
