The effect of group art therapy intervention program on somatization and self compassion for university students with childhood trauma

This study investigated the impact of a group art therapy intervention program on somatization and self-compassion in university students with a history of childhood trauma. The effectiveness of the program was examined using a pre-test-post-test measurement design with an experimental-control group structure, involving a sample of 18 students (9 in the experimental group, N=9 in the control group). Data collection tools included a Personal Information Form, Self-Compassion Scale, Symptom Checklist Somatization Subscale, and Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. Results revealed no significant relationship between somatization, self-compassion, and childhood trauma. Another finding of the study indicated that the group art therapy intervention program did not have a significant impact on self-compassion and somatization. The obtained results were discussed in conjunction with relevant literature, addressing the limitations and strengths of the research, and providing suggestions for future studies that could contribute to the field.
