The identity of Europeanity in the perspective of geographical location, institutionalization and identity relations

An accurate assessment of the identity of Europeanity, the starting point of the western world which has deeply influenced the world civilization and has guided it for the last few centuries, and the clear definition of Europe, will facilitate to understand what the western civilization and its inclusions are. Within this framework, instead of harsh theses that evaluates European identity via the approach of national identity and even discuss whether it actually exists or not, it is of great importance for research to evaluate this topic together with ancient Greek, Roman, Christianity and other important historical experiences, the main feeding lines of identity of Europeanity which have a deep historical background. In our study; it has been questioned what the identity of Europeanity is in the perspective of three main parameters: geographical location, institutionalization, and identity relation and how it should be assessed and whether it is a supra-national identity which emerged parallel to its growing other or not. In addition, the identity of Europeanity, existing and growing parallel to its growing other, has been examined to realize how it has experienced a transformation process based on European Union under the circumstances consisted of the advantages coming with its non- dominant but threatening other. The theme of the thesis has been analyzed via interdisciplinary methods with the uses of science branches such as psychology, philosophy, sociology, history and theology...etc. As a result of the study; in the light of these parameters, it is seen that the identity of Europeanism is a supranational identity which is unique to itself with its own historical background, in a war so as to exist by shaping itself according to its other and conditions and it should not be evaluated via approach of the national identity to be done correctly. On the other hand, the European Union is an experience as a periodic evolvement of a pre-existing supra-identity named as the identity of Europeanity of which metamorphosis depends on its other in parallel. While the European Union process is relatively adducting the understanding of supra-identity of Europeanity to the approach of national identity in many aspects, the discourse of ''western world and civilization is the outcome of the identity of Europeanity'' reminds that this supranational identity, which is unique to itself, does not fit into the patterns of national identity.
