A comparative analysis of cello education in Turkey in the context of western music and Turkish music

There are very few cellists who perform in both the modal Turkish music and classical Western music fields. Nevertheless, cellists in both fields have little to no knowledge about each other. Based on data obtained through interviews, a significant divergence between the two fields has been identified. In an effort to understand this divergence, the factors causing the separation have been explored. To present the situation in both fields comprehensively, historical, technological, physical, technical, theoretical, formal, practical, and political processes have been examined from every possible angle. Both music domains have been objectively explained. In this way, an attempt has been made to contribute to overcoming the alienation among musicians who receive education in both fields. After understanding the foundations of the divergence, the focus has been on overcoming this distinction specifically in the context of the cello instrument, with a particular emphasis on education. In cello education, the curricula used in both fields have been gathered into pools and presented in categories. Recommendations believed to make the two domains more understandable for each other have been provided based on the findings. Additionally, for cellists at various levels, alternative 20 study pieces and 5 traditional Turkish music pieces have been presented with both notation systems. Thus, an effort has been made to contribute to overcoming the alienation between the two fields by developing awareness.
