Public beliefs and folk medicine of Çorum

Folk beliefs are beliefs that are non-religious, are accepted by the society as a whole and passes on to next generation. Folk beliefs are not a religion, which has constant rules, but it is in close contact with religion. There are various stages in human life such as birth, marriage and death. This phase is called "transition periods". People are preparing for this transition period with various beliefs and practices. To know a society, it is necessary to know what they are doing in these transition periods. The practices they perform in the days they celebrate, the practices in the mourning ceremonies, give us information about that community. Various beliefs and practices related to these transition periods are applied in the central villages and districts, although they are not intense in the central district in Çorum region. Beliefs and practices which are related to marriage, pregnancy, birth and after, death and after, so on, are carried out. It is seen in Çorum region that folk medicine is extensively performed. There are several practices about home-made herbal cures, traditional-private treatments and tombs. It is observed that Hitit Culture, Old Turkish Culture and Post-Islam Culture are performed one inside the other. Beliefs are heavily concentrated in the Turkish-Islamic culture, but the practices under influence of other cultures are also seen to continue.
