A comparative analysis of Republic Era stories and novels with Western examples in the framework of gothic literature

Gothic literatüre has been a type of literature that has spread and developed in many parts of the world since its first appearance in English literature. In the works written with this understanding, while arousing fear and horror is at the forefront, on the other hand, it is aimed for the reader to take literary pleasure from it. It is a well-known fact that Gothic literature was in demand and loved in many parts of the world for centuries and also influenced Turkish literature. A number of theoretical ideas and psychological factors that underlie the writing and popularity of gothic works are also important. Novels and stories, which are included in Turkish literature through Western literature, are influenced by many important works in Western literature on gothic literature. Especially in the gothic novels and stories written in the Turkish literature of the republican period, where modernism and modernization followed a rapid course, the gothic understanding of the West makes itself felt strongly. Although there are some pauses from time to time during the period, Turkish writers often adopt the gothic understanding of the West. Especially the first years of the Republic and the period after 1980 were the periods when gothic works greatly took place in Turkish literature. From this point of view, it is an important event to reveal the influence of Western literature on the gothic works of Turkish literature. In this thesis that I dealt with, after the historical process and theoretical background of gothic literature were discussed, important gothic works of Turkish and Western literature were examined, and then one by one comparison was made.
