Socio-cultural comparison of Cumhuriyet Ornekkoy Neighborhood and Gözene Neighborhood

Since both Alevism and Sunnism are centered around the reverence for God (Hak), the Prophet Muhammad, and Ali, it would be inaccurate to speak of a fundamental division between the two. In fact, when considered purely in terms of belief, these traditions can be seen as unifying elements within society. The majority of the interviews conducted in the field support this view. Although a few differing opinions were encountered among individuals from both Alevi and Sunni backgrounds, these views did not entirely reject one another, nor did they fully align. In our view, the primary reason for these differences lies in the general lack of knowledge about Alevism and Sunnism. Nevertheless, according to most of our interviews, friendly relations exist between Gözene — the largest Sunni village in Malatya — and Cumhuriyet Örnek village — the largest Alevi village in the region — as well as other nearby Alevi settlements. Long-standing traditions such as kirvelik (spiritual kinship) and familial bonds established through intermarriage are clear indicators of this friendship. The majority of Alevi and Sunni residents in these villages have embraced the traditionally accepted definitions of their respective beliefs and have thus been able to live together peacefully and fraternally.
