The understanding of freedom in Republicanism: Philip Pettit's political ideal

The concept of freedom has been undoubtedly one of the fundamental values of political philosophy throughout history. But, with debates whether freedom should be a priority for the individual or for the society have been going on for years. In these debates, the tradition of Republican thought in particular developed against liberal thought, which saw itself as the only way to ensure the freedom of the individual. Republicanism is a tradition of thought that has experienced various historical processes since ancient times and continues to be influenced today. One of the concepts that are important in the tradition of republican thought and that we focus on for our study is freedom. The concept of freedom was shaped in the tradition of republican thought depending on the social and political conditions of the period. In this study, the concept of freedom is discussed on the basis of the tradition of republican thought. The freedom theory developed by Philip Pettit, who in the 20th century examined republicanism as a form of governance, a theory has been extensively examined. In addition, his historical adventure has been conveyed in order to better understand the tradition of Republican thought. Republican values such as citizenship, freedom and equality, which featured depending on different interpretations in different periods, were examined. The purpose of this study is to investigate Philip Pettit's ideal of "non-domination", who handle the concept of freedom among republican thinkers in a unique way, and to reveal the necessary conditions that this political ideal can achieve within the republican administration.
