Salihli district in the initiative years of the Republic (1923-33)

In the thesis called "Salihli district in the initiative years of the Republic (1923-33)", the terminal stages of the Ottoman State, National Resistance and the maiden years of a new Turkish Republic have been consideredin detail. The ongoing transformation and rapid evolution in governmental, social, cultural and economic structure of the town have been dramatically debated both in local and general dimensions. Beginning with the origin of the name of the town and its establishment, the thesis is initiated with theexposition of the climate of the region, flora and fauna and geographical particularities. Therefore, a variety ofdimensions concerning the theme has been aimed to reveal plainly. Afterwards, a concise chronicle of theregion has been investigated together with Salihli's fastgrowing development and accomplishment of its full-fledged identity in the surrounding environment. The antique city of Sardes was favoured to set forth firstbecause all previous works related with history of Salihli were initiated in the same identical content. It has been analysed elaborately why Salihli was one of the centres of the National Resistance against Greekinvasion. The tag of war experienced there was taken into account with all its relevant aspects. The painsendured in these years of invasion in Salihli and strains experienced were traced through the memoirs of thatperiod. The damages Greeks caused while retreating and years of indelible traces of the fire in Salihli havebeen unveiled. The problems of the refugees from Caucasia and the Balkans during the Ottoman Era and refugees fromGreece as a result of the bilateral population exchange during the Republican Era have been analysed inparticular. In addition, these mass movements were surveyed in order to display how they transformed Salihlifrom the point of view of social and economic aspects. What happened in educational, cultural and social life has been compiled by meanss of ledgers, journals andmemoires of that time. Reconstructive developments, public prosperity, municipal processes andimprovements in transportation were mentioned through the data obtained. The metamorphosis in economicallife and gradual growth of the town been analysed through miscellaneous sources and statictical data.
