Self-care management and adherence to refills in patients whohave chronic disease and admitted to the internal outpatient clinics

The research was conducted with 112 patients have at least one chronic disease and admitted to the internal outpatient clinics of two hospitals that are located in Yozgat. In order to conduct the research, permissions were taken from Yozgat Provincial Health Directorate and Bozok University, Faculty of Medicine Ethics Committee of Non-Invasive Clinical Studies. The data of the research were collected with face-to-face interview method by using descriptive characteristics form, self-care management process scale (SCMP-G) and adherence to refills and medications scale (ARMS-7). In the statistical calculation of the data, number, percentage, minimum and maximum values, mean and standard deviation, Shapiro Wilk, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis and Dunn's were used. The age average of the patients were determined as 61,55±16,66, body mass index average was 27,55±4,38, 53,6% of them were female, 30,4% of them were working and 33,9% of them were retired. When the self-care total scale and subscale scores of patients are examined, it was determined that self-protection subscale score was 73,33±8,51, social protection subscale was 48,39±7,04 and the total score of the scale was 121,72±13,84. A statistically significant difference was determined between the score averages of self-care management scale and social protection subscale according to their occupation, working in a job, smoking and surgery conditions (p<0,05). Adherence to Refills and Medications subscale of the patients was determined as 5,53±1,90, Prescription subscale score of them was 5,45±1,37 and the total score of the scale was 10,99±2,91. There was a statistically significant difference between the score averages of overall of the scale and the subscales of the patients in adherence to refills and medication scale (ARMS) according to their addiction level in smoking, using alcohol and daily-life activities (p<0,05). At the end of the study, it is recommended that nurses prepare educational videos, posters and brochures to increase awareness of patients about self-care management and drug compliance.
