Özet (EN)

In this thesis we investigate the noise effect on Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM)Optical Fiber Transmission Systems (OFCSs). Optical Amplifiers (OAs), which are usedfor optical signal amplification in OFCSs, bring in noise, known as Amplified SpontaneousEmission (ASE) noise to system. The noise together with fiber non-linearity degrades theOFCS performance thorough non-linear phase changes of the optical signal, which is knownas non-linear phase noise. In the thesis, we present a unifying theory, and a comprehensivemethodology and computational techniques for the analysis and characterization of non-linear phase noise and its impact on system performance.Considering both un-modulated and modulated carriers, in the analysis, we use thestochastic non-linear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) that arises in the analysis of wave propagation phenomena. Starting with the NLSE, we derive new systems of differential equationsthat characterize noise propagation along the fiber. We provide both analytical and numerical solution methodologies for the solution ofderived noise equation(s). For both un-modulated and modulated carriers we develop asystem Bit Error Ratio (BER) evaluation methodology and compute the system BER forDifferential Binary Phase Shift Keying (DBPSK) and Differential Quadrature Phase ShiftKeying (DQPSK) modulation schemes. We present results which are obtained using different system parameters, to explore the effect of noise on system performance.
