Resilient children and evidence-based resilient child raising methods

In studies conducted in the field of resilience, it has been shown that supportive and sensitive parenting is one of the protective factors. In this study, it is aimed to examine the definition of resilience together with the recent studies in the literature and to evaluate the effect of parent-child relationship on resilience in children. By using the keywords "parenting", "resilience", "resilient", the articles published in Pubmed, whose native language is only English, Turkish, German and French, from the date of the first published article on this subject until June 1, 2018 were evaluated. Forty-four original research articles that have "resilience", "resilient" words in their abstract or key words, or defined resilience or resilient in their main text and investigating the effect of parent-child relationship on resilience were evaluated. Articles that examine physiological resilience, parental resilience, or parent-child relationship but not profound enough were excluded from the study. As a result of the search for the keywords "dayanıklılık" and "yılmazlık" in Ulakbim, only one article investigating the effect of parenting was evaluated for the research. General literature review on resilience, articles in accordance with the research criteria and with 12 additional articles those were obtained from the reference of other articles, total of 57 articles were evaluated. It was observed that, authoritative parenting, warm and good mother-child relationship, positive parenting and the quality of time spent with the children had a positive effect on resilience; children who were exposed to authoritarian and harsh parenting were less resistant. It is known that training given to families on childcare increases their knowledge and skills. Informing parents about developing endurance in children and raising awareness on this issue can lead to the raising of resilient generations.
