Market analysis in sea-borne freight transportation and investigation of the effect of 2007 financial crisis on the profitability of companies in the sector

Global financial crises in recent years have affected the maritime sector in general and sea-borne freight transportation in particular. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of 2007 financial crisis on the profitability of companies in the sector and making market analysis in sea-borne freight transportation. To this end, the profitability and efficiency levels were determined and compared with the ratio analysis through the annual reports published by global companies operating in the sector. As a result, it was determined that 2007 financial crisis adversely affected the financial structure of companies in maritime sector. It is hoped that this study will contribute to Turkish literature as it is the first study covering all components of sea-borne freight transportation as of June 2019.
