The effects of sedection on crixiety patiers indental surgery

Anxiety is a state of dense worry and fear that forms in the subconscious against unknowndangers. The main reasons increasing the level of anxiety are: unsuccessful dental treatmentsexperienced in the past, fears belonging to the childhood, negative expectations, and insufficientdoctor-patient communication resulting from lack of confidence of the patient felt for the doctor.Patients with high anxiety level could form the patient group who delay their doctor visits andeven do not come for their controls.Today, local anaesthesia is the most frequently used method in dental treatments. Localanaesthesia prevents arising from pain, but does not have an effect on the anxiety level. The aim ofthis study is to investigate the effect of local anaesthesia used with sedation on anxiety.In this study forty patients, ranging between 16 and 70 (38,67±14,24)were randomlyselected. All patients were divided into the study and the control group. They were asked to fill inthe Modified Dental Anxiety Scale (MDAS) questionnaire preoperatively, during the operation andpostoperatively in order to measure their anxiety levels. The patients? hemodynamic variables suchas heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and ST segment were measured and recordedpreoperatively, during the operation with 10 minutes intervals, and postoperatively.Consequently, we think that the frequent use of sedation in patients with dental anxiety willdecrease, thus patients will be more willing to come regularly to their controls, and the duration ofthe treatments will be likely to shorten since dentists will have to deal less with dental anxiety.Keywords: Anxiety, sedation, ST segment.
