Hapax legomena in the Compilation Dictionary

Language is a living entity and tool that humans have created over time; it enables communication between humans, makes humans different from other living things. Language has constantly improved and differentiated itself for centuries. The dictionaries are the vocabulary treasure of the language that has kept it as a living entity and prevented it from being forgotten and lost. Dictionaries are the most significant sources, where all the vocabulary that languages have produced over time is collected. Many dictionaries have been composed in different languages throughout history. There are significant dictionaries on the Turkish language as well. One of them is the Compilation Dictionary created between 1932-1960 by volunteers' and field experts' contributions. Dictionaries comprise words. Lexicology, a sub-branch of linguistics, determines which rules to adhere to when creating a dictionary, follows the processes of compiling and selecting the words in the language's vocabulary, and forms the institutional framework of dictionary preparation. Researchers examine dictionaries in different ways in terms of form and content. This study will discuss hapax legomena in the Compilation Dictionary. Hapax legomena are the words that occur only once in all sources of old or new languages. The current study aims to determine whether the hapax legomena in the Compilation Dictionary are actual and reveal the properties of hapax legomenon. Hapax legomena in the Compilation Dictionary were identified and filed with the scanning method. Detected items were listed in alphabetical order. At the end of each item, the volume and page number of the word are also indicated. Various domestic sources related to the research subject were consulted, and foreign literature studies were also investigated when appropriate. The primary source of this research is the "Colloquial Language Compilation Dictionary in Turkey" published by the Turkish Linguistic Society.
