Abstract (EN)

In this study, antimicrobial, antioxidant and plasmid DNA properties of above-below ground parts of Heliotropium samolifolium Bunge subsp. erzurumicum were determined. This subspecies is herbaceous, annual, 10-50 cm high, dense villous hairy, inflorescence with 10-50 sessile flowered. It distributes only in the vicinity of Olur (Erzurum) in Turkey and is known as "Erzurum heliotrope" by the people. Heliotropium L. species include chemical matters such as; pyrrolizidine alkaloids, terpenoids, saponins, phenols, flavonoids, tannis, and steroids. These species, due to the antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, wound healing, antiviral, antitumor, cytotoxicity and phytotoxicity properties, have been using for the treatment of many diseases for a long time. The antimicrobial activity tests of plant the extracts were performed using 4 different standard strains (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Micrococus luteus NRLLB 1018, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) and a yeast (Candida albicans ATCC 10231) and MIC (Minimum Inhibition Concentration) method. For the antioxidant activity studies, DPPH ve total phenolic content calculation methods were applied. The effects on DNA damage of extracts were investigated using pBR322 plasmid DNA. Related to the findings of our research, below-ground ethanol extracts of Heliotropium samolifolium subsp. erzurumicum has stronger antimicrobial activity and it was seen that it has an effect both on the Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. When antioxidant activity results of the extracts investigated, the highest activity was seen in above-ground ethanol+ water, chloroform and below-ground ethanol extracts as free radical scavenging activity. Related to the total phenolic matter content, the highest activity was observed in the extracts prepared above-ground, below-ground chloroform and below-ground ethanol+ water. It was seen that below-ground water and chloroform extracts had a gretaer effect on the open spiral form of DNA. It was seen that below-ground extracts were more effective than the above-ground extracts of this subspecies as they are antioxidant and antimicrobial and they destroy the structure of DNA. At the end of this research, the extracts obtained from this subspecies can be used in medicine industry.
