School managers' satisfaction and expectations from servant staff in state schools

Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the opinions of the school managers who are working in state schools, about their satisfaction and expectations from the servant staff in their schools. The sample was comprised of 4 school managers and 8 assistant school managers working at Muratpaşa/Antalya region primary and secondary schools in 2018 – 2019 academic year who were selected with convenient sampling method. This research was a qualitative study and multiple holistic case study design was used. Data collection technique was individual interviews. For this research, semi-structured interview form was developed with expert people and literature study was carried out. Semi-structured interview form included prior knowledges and personal info of school managers. After the prior knowledges the questions were asked. Questions were become varied as per the flow of interview and interviewee was forced to open up the answers. These interviews were recorded on tape recorder as well. In this study, content analysis was carried out and results were presented with a descriptive expression. Furthermore, direct expressions were given and obtained findings were categorised in the scope of the emerged themes and patterns in accordance with the research targets. As per the results of the research, servant staff in the schools, besides that they make contribution to different fields, some negative impact was existing as well. School managers were of the opinion that, servant staffs who will perform a duty in the schools, should take educations to increase their professional qualifications and most of existing servant staffs do not have such qualifications. In addition, school managers also believed that servant staff which are employed in parent-teacher association part, are the most productive ones among the servant staffs working at schools and the selection of these staff should be done by school managers their selves. School managers were indicate that servant staff which are employed in parent-teacher association part, having a good communication skill with teachers and students, finishing the works in time, carrying out their works without the necessity of warning, they also indicated that they decide who will work in this job and they dismiss the servant staff from employment if they are not satisfied. In addition, school managers were indicate that that servant staff which are employed in structure of İŞKUR, doing their job well, having good communication skill with teachers and students, on the other hand they also indicated that İŞKUR does not always charge decent servant staff and some of the servant staffs do not carry out any different work except cleaning, due to their job description. Moreover, school managers also indicated that permanent servant staffs, carrying out all duties which are requested from them, adopting the school, having a good communication skill with their colleagues, having a work experience, however they also indicated that they have difficulty with servant staff who come from social services, this is required to check if they carry out their duties or not, by the reason of being state official, they abstain from work. Adoption to the school, sense of mission, advanced human relations, carrying out the cleaning works properly, finishing the works in time, attending their works, working wishfully, carrying out their works without the necessity of warning were the expectations of the school managers from the servant staff which are employed in their schools. Based on the results of the research, assignment of the servant staff in the schools may be under the authority of school managers, certain level of education may be given priority while charging servant staff and education may be provided for existing servant staffs by directing them.
