Public service broadcasting in digital era: The cases of BBC, TRT and MNB

Public service broadcaster which aimed with enlightening the citizens and providing their educational, cultural, and entertainment needs, is an institution that serves both public and national interests. As social responsibility, public broadcasters have to support the community's participation and voice in order to resolve their common problems, while maintaining the combination of national unity and security, bringing together traditional and reforms. Public service broadcasting, which had a monopoly in the field of journalism until the 1980s, faced many difficulties and challenges due to the neo-liberal market, globalization and the new technologies of communications. In the digital era which based on technological development, public broadcasters need to keep up with current strategies, content for various audiences and digital platforms in multimedia. For this reason, the subject of "Public Service Broadcasting in the Digital Era – The Cases of BBC, TRT and MNB" has been chosen in order to research the revised public service broadcasting strategies in the digital age. In the first chapter, the concepts of public service broadcasting, global approaches, main principles, historical development, the changes of the neoliberal era, the challenges and problems of the digital age are discussed, while in the second chapter, the development of public broadcasting, such as BBC, TRT and MNB, are highlighted and the features of their activities. In addition, some of the digital services introduced in the new media environment have been examined. In the third chapter, the changes, advantages and opportunities brought by the new media and digital era to journalism, including IPTV service, and the demands of the audience are examined. Finally, the policies implemented in the digital environment and the new services offered by those three public broadcasters are compared, their common problems are identified, and core policies to survive in the future are discussed.
