New parenting model through digital habitus: 'Sharenting' in the context of child privacy violation

Today, in the digital age, social media networks are heavily integrated into daily life, affecting many dynamics from interpersonal communication to family life. Parenting practices have also been transformed to a certain extent in this digital world and the current concept of "sharenting" has emerged. Sharenting refers to parents frequently posting about their children on social media platforms, often without the child's knowledge or consent. While these posts are driven by motivations ranging from the pursuit of happiness to showcasing parenting achievements, they also raise critical concerns such as privacy, digital footprint, and the ethics of online representation. In order to address these complex dynamics, this study, based on Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework, examines the phenomenon of sharenting from the perspective of parents and children with concepts such as habitus, space and capital. In the mixed method research, quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted simultaneously. A face-to-face survey was conducted with 320 students and an online survey was conducted with 300 parents in schools in different socioeconomic regions determined within the borders of Izmir province; face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 volunteer students and 20 parents. The findings of the study provide important evaluations about parents' motivations for sharenting, privacy awareness, digital parenting knowledge, children's thoughts and attitudes about sharenting, digital privacy awareness and autonomy demands. In addition, the study is important in terms of revealing the effects of socioeconomic inequalities, gendered norms and cultural narratives on digital practices. Bourdieu's theory shows how habitus as an internalized structure influences sharenting behaviors and how digital spaces facilitate or constrain practices based on different levels of cultural, social and symbolic capital. In this context, the study discusses the dual role of sharenting in encouraging sharing while risking children's privacy and autonomy, and aims to give voice to children in particular.
