The examination of the effects of digital story development on digital parenting and technology usage attitudes

Children taking place actively in internet world encounter online risks. Parents have the greatest role in helping children take part in a safer and more informed internet world and protect them from online risks. However, it is seen that many parents cannot keep up with the social transformation at efficient level. At this point, it is so important for parents to question their digital parenting roles. In this context, it is thought that digital story activities are effective instrument to develop digital parents competences. Based all these situations, the aim of this study is to reveal digital parenting competence and raise awareness by examining the effect of digital story activities about digital parenting on parents' digital parenting attitudes. At the same time, it is aimed to examine parents' technology use and reveal their technology use attitudes. The research was designed with mixed method model. Interview was conducted on a qualitative dimension and it was a quantitative quasiexperimental design. The mixed method pattern used in this research is the descriptive sequential pattern mixed method. The study group of the research is composed of 40 parents living in a city of Western Black Sea Region who have different socio-demographic features and children being at primary and elementary level of Science and Art Centre. The digital parenting attitudes of the parents in the experimental group increased after the digital story activities. In the control group, there was a decrease in attitude scores. However, it was concluded that there was no statistically significant difference between the digital parenting attitudes of the experimental and control groups. According to results of this research, design-based teaching activities such as story development contribute to parents' digital parenting awareness.
