Abstract (EN)
This thesis focuses on the relationship between space and new media technologies that emerged from digitalization, the technological paradigm of contemporary societies. The main problematic of this study is how the hybrid spaces that come to the agenda with the association between new digital communication and media technologies and space, which is one of the most important coordinates of social life, affect our way of experiencing space. Qualitative research method was used and the literature was searched; the connection between the individual/society, space and technology has been tried to be established. In order to understand the spatial transformation, firstly a historical framework has been drawn and the space has been dealt with in the macro scale on the axis of capitalism, modernity, media technologies and surveillance. In the second part, current concepts such as hybrid space and augmented space are discussed with new-digital media technologies and technological developments that bring about this transformation are examined. It has been suggested that the spatialization of the media with locative media technologies built on digital mapping systems capable of positioning individuals in hybrid space. In the problematic axis of the study, locative media practices interacting with the urban spaces where digital media technologies are embedded have been classified and examined in a descriptive way through the existing literature. It is seen that the intertwining between digital locative media Technologies and physical space creates a new spatial experience and perception that eliminates the traditional distinctions between these two worlds. Hybrid spaces are reshaping not only the experience of the individual, but the whole of social life in general. While physical space is being strengthened with digital media, it also causes the emergence of spatial data about individuals and creates geo-surveillance as a new type of surveillance. In order to understand the relationship between digital media and space, looking at the whole picture becomes increasingly important. For this reason, spatial transformations are discussed in the conclusion section on the axis of possibilities and threats. Keywords: digital media, space, locative media, spatial media, hybrid space, augmented space, spatial data, geo-surveillance
