The effect of the use of arrangement musics on digital platforms in secondary school music lessons on students' interest levels in traditional Turkish music

The rapid changes experienced in technology and science globally affect the lives and learning processes of societies and individuals by transforming them. The main purpose of this study is to experience the contemporary learning transformations of traditional music, which is an important element of social culture. The research includes trial processes aimed at increasing the interest of the new generation in our traditional music with designs suitable for current developments and transformations. The aim of the research is to examine the effect of using traditional Turkish music arrangements in secondary school music lessons on student interest levels and to include the opinions of music teachers in the context of transferring traditional Turkish music to students. In this research, which aims to determine the interest of secondary school students in traditional Turkish music, a mixed method was adopted since quantitative and qualitative data were used together. Convergent design was used among mixed method designs in the research. In the quantitative part of the research, a pretest-posttest control group experimental design was used, and in the qualitative part, a semi-structured interview technique was used, and these studies were conducted simultaneously. The study group in the experimental part of the research consisted of students (n=154) studying at İbni Sina Secondary School located in the central district of Tokat province in the 2023-2024 academic year. The qualitative study group consisted of music teachers (n=55) working in the central district of Tokat province in the 2023-2024 academic year. In the study, for the purpose of collecting quantitative data, a "Traditional Turkish Music Interest Survey" was prepared by the researcher to be used in the pretest and posttest, and a "Student Observation Form for Interest in Turkish Music" was created to closely follow the process and observe the students at all times. The first three sub-problems of the study were examined with these tools. In the last sub-problem of the study, which is the teacher opinions, "Interview Questions Related to Turkish Music Transmission" developed by the researcher for qualitative data were used. In addition, expert opinions were obtained for all the measurement tools used and while creating the work pool, lesson plans were prepared according to the selected works and expert opinions were sought again. As a result of this study, it was observed that the students' interest levels increased when they listened to traditional Turkish music arrangements in music lessons, and the importance of using technology in the transmission of traditional music and including arranged works in music lessons was mentioned. In addition, according to the teachers' opinions, the students' interest in traditional Turkish music is quite low. Factors such as age, environment, social media and popular culture were stated as the reasons for this lack of interest.
