Postpartum birth satisfaction and readiness for hospital discharge of women with and without language barriers

Objective: Postpartum birth satisfaction and readiness for discharge of women with (WLB) and without language barriers (WNLB) were examined. Method: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted with 360 women gave childbirth in university hospital. The data were collected by "Identification Form", "Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS)" and "Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS)". T test, variance, Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, chi-square and correlation analysis were applied. Results: Birth numbers of WLB is higher than WNLB. WNLB 47.4% had cesarean and WLB's 46% had vaginal birth. WNLB's 28.9% disturbed from cold and lighted delivery room and WLB's 36.8% disturbed from personel communication. WNLB's 72.7% and all WLBs had discharge training on first day of birth. Except ability subscale, no difference was found between BSS and subscales or RHDS and subscales scores of WNLBs and WLBs. The mean score of the readiness to discharge scale of women without language barriers was found to be 170.89 ±30, and 170.03±26 for women with language barrier. Among the discharge sub-dimensions of women with language barriers, the mean score of the personal situation dimension was 59.56±13, the knowledge dimension was 52.65±15.33, the ability dimension was 26.43±4, and the expected support dimension was 32.23±11. In women with language barriers, these sub-dimensions were 59.65±11, 51.67±13, 25.11±4 and 33.58±9, respectively. The total mean score of the birth satisfaction scale of women without language barriers was found to be 81.16±14, and it was 81.03±12 for women with language barriers. Conclusion: WLBs were satisfied from their childbirth experience and ready for hospital discharge as much as WNLBs. This shows that Syrian women find health care service sufficient.
