Effect size of language learning strategies - A meta-analysis study

In the contemporary world, the significance of being multilingual in various fields such as education, business, and diplomacy is increasingly recognized. In this context, the thesis titled "Effect Size of Language Learning Strategies - A Meta-Analysis Study" evaluates the effectiveness of language learning strategies through effect size analysis and emphasizes the importance of strategic approaches in language acquisition. The research examines the general usage states of memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies used in the language learning process, as well as the effect sizes of these strategies, through a comprehensive literature review and analysis method. The methodological approach undertaken in this thesis includes an extensive literature review and selection criteria, data extraction, and the meta-analysis process. From 77 articles obtained through detailed searches in the Web of Science database, those that met the established criteria were meticulously analyzed for data extraction. The effect size analyses quantitatively assess the effectiveness of language learning strategies, offering evidence-based recommendations to educators and students. The findings of the research indicate that memory, cognitive, and compensatory strategies have a small to moderate effect on language learning, whereas metacognitive, affective, and social strategies contribute positively to the learning process. Additionally, the impacts of variables such as publication year, native language, target language, language level, sample group, gender, and age on the usage and effect sizes of strategies were investigated. The study reveals the importance of language learning strategies in optimizing teaching methods and student outcomes. In this vein, comprehensive suggestions are provided for the teaching, application, and personalization of language learning strategies. These recommendations focus on the effective use and instruction of memory, cognitive, compensatory, metacognitive, affective, and social strategies. Consequently, the thesis contributes valuable insights towards making the language learning process more effective and efficient.
