The relation of religious attitude and self esteem with benign and malicious envy

Benign and malicious envy have accompanied mankind since its existence. While malicious envy is seen as a malicious feeling by both society and various religions, benign envy has been accepted by society and religions. The reflections of these emotions can affect an individual and the society in different ways. Since malicious envy is not an accepted emotion in religions, the religious attitude of an individual may cause the individual to try to suppress his sense of envy. In addition, self-esteem which means self-love, self-acceptance and self-respect can also affect individuals' emotions and attitude towards other people due to his positive attitude and satisfaction to himself. In this study, it has been investigated whether the levels of individuals' religious attitude and self-esteem cause differentiation on benign and malicious envy and if self-esteem, religious attitude, benign and malicious envy differ according to some demographic variables or not. The method of the research is quantitative, and its design is relational screening. In 2019, 415 men and women who live in different cities and are in range of different ages with different income levels as well participated in the study. The data were collected through an online and face to face questionnaire. In the research, "Ok Religious Attitude Scale" to measure the participants' religious attitude levels, "Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale" to measure their self-esteem levels and "BeMas Benign and Malicious Envy Scale" to measure their benign and malicious envy levels were used. The results of this study finds out that: the correlation of benign and malicious envy is positive and low; the correlation of envy and self-esteem is negative and low; the correlation of malicious envy and religious attitude is negative and low; the correlation of benign envy and self-esteem is positve and low. Benign envy, malicious envy, self-esteem and religious attitude differ statistically according to some demographic variables. Details of the data are given in the findings section of this study.
