Evaluation of total and segmental body analysis parameters measured by multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance method in diabetic adults

Abstract (EN)

Aim: Diabetes affects body composition parameters. Examining the changing body compositions and following the relationship with diabetes are important both in the treatment process of the people and in the pre-disease diagnosis and prevention steps. Objective: It was aimed to evaluate the relationship between physical activity and body composition parameters, especially phase angle, visceral adiposity, segmental fat and muscle values in diabetic patients. Method: A total of 93 participants (non-diabetic, n=31; type 2 diabetic, n=63) were voluntarily included in the study. The short form of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to determine the physical activity levels of the participants. Body composition parameters were measured by multi-frequency bioelectrical impedance method using Tanita MC 780 Black. In all statistical tests, p values below 0.05 were considered as statistically significant results. Results: In the findings of the study, the mean visceral fat area of the individuals included in the study was found to be 50cm2 in the non-diabetic group and 90cm2 in the diabetic group. Percentage of edema (Ecw/Tbw) was 41.24% in the non-diabetic group and 44.91% in the diabetic group (p<0.05).In diabetic adults, visceral adiposity area, edema ratio, fat ratios in each segment were found to be higher than in the control group (p<0.01). Lean muscle mass and phase angle values were higher in the control group compared to diabetic adults (p<0.001). Conclusion: The physical activity level was insufficient in the type 2 diabetes group studied. In the present study, among the body composition parameters, segmental fat ratios, visceral fat areas, BMIs were higher than normal, and edema rates were found to be higher in adults with diabetes; The fact that muscle mass and lean mass ratios were lower than normal and the phase angle values were lower once again showed the importance of exercise and physical activity level.
