Abstract (EN)

In this study, Sprague Dawley rats were used to evaluate the effects of captopril on oxidative stress and micronucleus formationin diabetes.The ratswere divided into3groups; control group, streptozotocin group (45mg/kg STZ, ip) and STZ+captopril (45 mg/kg STZ, ip. + 50mg/kg.L-1 in drinking water). After eight weeks,the rats were sacrifiedunder ether anesthesia, and blood, liver, heartandkidneyswere taken. SerumALT,AST, LDH, CKandCKMBlevels and tissueTBARS, GSHandTSHlevels were evaluated. In addition, the formation of micronuclei in lymphocytes were studied.Significant increases were found in serum ALT, AST and LDH levels and lipid peroxidation in liver and kidney (p<0.05 and p<0.001). Furthermore, liverGSHlevelsdecreasedsignificantly(p<0.001). Captoprilhas establisheda significant reduction (p<0.01)on the frequency ofmicronucleus formation.Our results showed that, diabetesincreasesoxidativestressandincreased free radical activityin diabetesmay be responsible fordevelopingcomplications. However, captopril, aACEI,contribute tothe increase intotalthiolgroups, while providing significantantioxidanteffectis notmentionedin the literatureit is concluded. Application ofthe protective effect ofcaptoprilindiabetic nephropathyandcardiovascularcomplications should re-evaluated infurther studies.
