Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT In this thesis, the influence of Eastern cultures in the formation process of Modern Art in the West was examined, with particular emphasis on Ancient Indian, Chinese and Japanese arts. The East is a very deep and comprehensive subject to study all of its civilizations with their art and values. For this reason, the research was limited to the Indian, Chinese and Japanese civilizations that were looked more closely; While these three civilizations are examined in terms of their social, economic, religion and beliefs in addition to their arts in their historical processes, the art of the Egyptian and Iranian civilizations, and the Central Asian Steppe art which we cannot think independently from them, are also mentioned. In this study; The effect of Japanese art and other non-Western cultures on the formation processes of modern art movements in Europe, which is thought to have influenced European art in the most direct way, using the formal and technical expression methods, which it assimilated from civilizations such as China, India, Korea, and Iran, to shape its own artistic language has also been investigated. The formation of modern art movements in Europe, covering the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, and then affecting the development of art almost until today; It has taken place under the influence of many dynamics such as industrialization, wars, the process of civilization and colonialism. All these social dynamics, which are interconnected, have developed against Eastern societies since the very ancient times of history. This situation resulted in the exploitation of the East not only in terms of economic, geographical and natural resources, but also in terms of cultural and artistic values, thus constituting a source for the artistic pursuits of the West. In this context, the aim of this research is to examine the orientation of European artists to the East in a deadlock in terms of new artistic pursuits and creativity that emerged with the v rejection of the tradition that has been continuing since the Renaissance, while on the one hand, they were faced with industrialization and a related social collapse.
