Özet (EN)

İntroduction: This study aims to determine adverse reproductive health outcomes among the nurses working in chemotheraphy units and other departments of Dokuz Eylul University (DEU) Hospital. In addition to this primary aim, associations between chemotherapeutic application process and adverse reproductive health outcomes were also examined. Method: A cross sectional study was planned with 93 nurses working at Dokuz Eylul University Hospital; 45 of them were regularly and intensively apply chemotherapeutic agents and others were working different departments and their job description does not have chemotherapeutic application. First group was accepted as exposed, second as unexposed. Data were collected by a questionnaire form prepared by the researcher. Distribution indicators such as percentages, arithmetic means and standard deviations were used along with chi-square test in the analysis. Results: When adverse reproductive healthy outcomes or effects were examied in the study; no there was not any stillbirth incidents in exposed group, (n=3) 7.1% of exposed group had spontaneous abortion and (n=1) 2.4% of exposed group had premature delivery, (n=1) 2.9% of exposed group had congenital malformations among the children of the nurses and (n=8) 23.5% of exposed group were applied chemotherapy during the pregnancy period. (n=2) 4.3% of unexposed group had stillbirth, (n=2) 12.8% of unexposed group had spontaneous abortion and (n=5) 10.6% of unexposed group had preterm delivery and (n=1) 2.4% of unexposed group had children had congenital malformations among the children of the nurses, (n=4) 9.8% of unexposed group were applied chemotherapy during the pregnancy period. Unexpectedly, the frequency of reproductive health problems were found to be higher among the unexposed group of nurses though not statistically significant. There was no relationship between sociodemographics-personal characteristics of nurses, work life characteristics of nurses related to occupational exposure to chemotherapeutics and protective measures in connection with reproductive health. The number of patients and the frequency of handling chemotherapeutic drug are found to be higher among the nurses in exposed group. Insufficient in-service training was also indicated in this group. Conclusion: The findings showed that there was no difference regarding adverse reproductive health outcomes of between nurses who exposed and unexposed chemotherapeutic drug . In order to better understand the association between reproductive health problems and the chemotherapy administration processer, further studies with larger sample size in which perform genotoxic, biological, and environmental monitoring together are needed.
