Analysis of the cartoon named Doru through the values included in the social studies curriculum

It is known that the use of mass media is becoming more widespread day by day. With their colorful content, devices such as television, computers, and tablets are found interesting by children. While children's interaction with mass media is very useful when used correctly, its misuse leads to great dangers. With the widespread use of mass media, the importance of content selection for children is increasing day by day. TRT Çocuk channel aims to transfer the desired values to new generations by preparing content for children in line with the main objectives of National Education. In this study, following to this objective, the popular animation series Doru aired on TRT Çocuk channel is analyzed to determine how frequently and in what manner it incorporated 18 values (justice, importance of family unity, independence, peace, scientific approach, diligence, solidarity, sensitivity, honesty, aesthetics, equality, freedom, respect, love, responsibility, frugality, patriotism, helpfulness), those outlined in the 2018 Social Studies Curriculum. In this research, a qualitative research method, document analysis, are utilized to examine 31 episodes between the 15th and 45th episodes of the cartoon series Doru. The episodes watched in the research are examined in terms of time indicators, values, verbal and visual expressions in the scenes where the value are mentioned, and based on these, the findings of the study are presented. The research findings revealed that the most emphasized values in the episodes of cartoon are helpfulness, love, responsibility, solidarity, and respect, while the least emphasized values are peace, justice, thrift, and equality. Values that received no mention in the research are independence and patriotism. Based on the research findings, recommendations are provided to production companies, educators, and researchers interested in this field of study.
