Grand coalition examples in the world and their applicability in Türkiye

A grand coalition is the formation of a coalition by two major parties with different ideological views or more than one party with similar voting rates, coming together around a common goal in times of crisis. Such coalitions emerge in times of crisis and are seen as a last resort. It is widely practiced in European countries such as Germany, Austria, and Italy. Turkey's first coalition experience is an example of a grand coalition in 1961. With the transition to the presidential government system in Turkey, the importance of alliances between parties has increased. Although grand coalition is thought to be specific to the parliamentary system, it is also possible to apply it in presidential systems. This study discusses whether grand coalition practice can be implemented in Turkey by mentioning grand coalition examples in the world. Although there is no theoretical obstacle to the grand coalition in Turkey, in recent years the rhetoric in politics, polarization, political culture, and democracy culture have emerged as actual obstacles to the grand coalition.
