The effects of World Wars on poster designs-propaganda poster reviews

In this study, I. and II. Poster designs made during the World Wars were examined. The reasons for the visual and semantic changes in the poster designs prepared during the war were examined and their effects on the development of the posters were revealed. Examining this period, in which the value of posters in visual communication tools increased, is of great importance in terms of understanding the design language of posters. Students who master the style of the posters and the language of the codes on the posters can directly affect the society and environment they live in, by making the right analyzes and inferences during the design process, increasing their individual awareness and approaching social issues. The posters designed during the war periods were greatly influenced by the economic, political, social and cultural events. The fact that poster designs created a unique style and progressed in this direction until today is a result of the wars of the 20th century and the social developments of the period. In this period, printing techniques and technologies also gained diversity. The development in printing technologies has also been reflected in production speed and costs. This process has increased the demand for posters and enabled the formation of different styles in posters. In this period, where every event and development affected each other closely, it was observed that the changes in the art movements had a direct effect on the style of the posters. It is seen that the artists affected by the war designed posters for various reasons. This situation also leads to the evaluation of poster designs in an artistic framework. During the research, some of the posters of the period were analyzed with the semiotic analysis method. Based on the data obtained during the research process, it was concluded that the developments during the World Wars greatly changed the semantic and visual aspects of poster designs.
