Examination of Medical Illustration Education curriculums in the world and a suggestion of education curriculum

Considered under visual communication, illustration emerged as the drawings based on expression in history and has reached today as being divided into branches in its own field. Considered under the title of graphic, illustration emerges as book drawings in the simplest sense. In the field of medical illustration, it is defined as informative illustrations that cover art and medicine. Illustrations play a major role in all areas of education. Since the writing was introduced to our lives, the printed publications and electronic publications, with the effect of technology, have led to the diversification and easy accessibility of educational materials. The illustrations used for training purposes have almost become compulsory today and they have found a place in educational materials for the students of all ages from different fields by utilizing new areas such as 3 dimensional modelling and animation with the advancement of technology. The medical illustration that has not become an effective educational field in Turkey is studied in just a few distinguished universities in the world. Medical illustration is a promising career in professional terms, though it has a critical and challenging training process in technical and competency terms. However, the importance of training medical illustrators cannot be understood in Turkey, which is home to a large number of universities providing more than enough medical and arts education. It is of great importance to have specialists produced the educational materials in pedagogical sense. An illustrator who has been trained through medicine and arts education can make great contributions to this field. The curriculum presented in this study has been prepared taking into consideration the educational and physical conditions in Turkey and Dumlupınar University upon examining the curriculums of the most comprehensive and successful institutions providing medical illustration training.
