Mineral coal constitutes the largest part of the coal around the world. However our country, contrary to the world, is richer at the aspect of lignite reserves and it is the sixth richest country in lignite reserves. Our lignite reserves, except for the Tunçbilek and Soma Coals, are poor quality colas. But these coals have high sulphur content for the environment standards. It is the ash, sulphur and calorific rates that determine the sales value of clean coal. However it is seen that the most of the coals in our country are poor quality coals when evaluated in terms of ash, sulphur and calorific values. The largest energy resources in Turkey are our lignite. It is an environmental and technological necessity to carry out some enrichment processes so that these lignite coals can be used in industry and thermal power plants.In this study, it aimed to produce clean coal by raising quality of the coals, with different carbonization levels, collected from different regions (Kütahya-Seyitömer, Kütahya-Tunçbilek, Kütahya-Gediz, Manisa-Soma and Tekirdağ-Malkara) with the coking in low temperature and magnetic enrichment processes. In the study, the removability of sulphur and volatile substance in the coals was investigated by low temperature coking them in different temperatures (500, 550 and 600) and durations (15, 30, 60) after breaking them under -1mm and classifying them -1+0.125 mm size. We got important output in all the coals except for Gediz coal 74%, 56%, 49%, 31% and 15% of the sulphur were removed respectively from the colas of Soma, Seyitömer, Tunçbilek, Tekirdağ and Gediz. Clean coals which have sulphur content below 1 %and low ash content and were produced from all the coals except for Gediz coal after low temperature coking followed by magnetic separation.All these findings showed that clean coal which has low ash, sulphur and volatile substance content and high calorific value and is environmentally friendly could be produced with magnetic enrichment after low temperature coking.
